Squalene is a major
component in various deep-sea shark liver oils, facilitating the delivery of
oxygen around the body and allowing their survival in the harsh conditions at
depths between 1800 and 6000 feet. It is polyunsaturated oil, 30 carbons long
with 5 unsaturated double bonds. (By comparison, DHA fish oil is 22 carbons
long with 4 unsaturated double bonds). These unique double bonds are what make
squalene so effective in human metabolism. They enable the transport of oxygen
as well as the absorption of toxins. It is a primary way in which sharks can
live in very deep water with very little oxygen (squalene stores and transports
oxygen).
